Your mulank (birth number) is the simplest number in Indian numerology, and the one people ask about most. Here is how to work it out, what each number from 1 to 9 is traditionally linked with, and what it cannot tell you on its own.
How to find your mulank
Take only the day of your birth and add its digits until one digit is left. Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Born on the 7th: 7.
Your bhagyank (destiny number) uses the whole date. For 14-08-1990: 1+4+0+8+1+9+9+0 = 32, and 3 + 2 = 5. The numerology calculator does both, and your name number, in one step.
Numbers 1 to 9 at a glance
Each number is ruled by a planet. These are the traditional associations used in Indian (Vedic) numerology:

These are tendencies, not limits. Plenty of successful doctors have mulank 5, and plenty of artists have mulank 8.
Mulank, bhagyank and name number: the difference
- Mulank (birth number): your nature and how you act day to day. It is felt most strongly in the early part of life.
- Bhagyank (destiny number): the direction life takes you and what grows with age. Many numerologists give it more weight after about 35.
- Name number: the vibration of the name you use, calculated letter by letter (the Chaldean system is common in India). It is the only one of the three you can change.
Three myths
- "8 is an unlucky number." No. 8 is Saturn's number: slow, but solid. Many people with 8 build lasting careers and businesses.
- "Your mulank tells your whole future." It shows a tendency of character. Timing and events come from the full chart and dasha.
- "Change your name spelling and life changes." A spelling change is suggested only when the name number clashes with both mulank and bhagyank, and only after your goals are understood.

How do I calculate my mulank?
Add the digits of your day of birth until one digit remains. Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5.
Which is more important, mulank or bhagyank?
Both. Mulank shows your nature; bhagyank shows the direction of life. They are read together, with the name number.
Is mulank 8 bad?
No. It is ruled by Saturn, which gives results slowly but lastingly. It is not an unlucky number.
Does my mulank decide my career?
No. It shows fields that suit your nature. The full chart, education and your own interest matter more.
Can I change my mulank?
No, it comes from your date of birth. What can change is the spelling of the name you use, if a numerologist advises it.
