What is Manglik dosha?

A chart is called Manglik when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Many astrologers check this from the ascendant (lagna), and also from the Moon and Venus; some traditions add the 2nd house.

How common is it?

Very common. Mars falls in five of the twelve houses by the basic rule, so roughly four charts in ten are Manglik from the ascendant alone. A Manglik chart is ordinary, not rare or unlucky.

Four common myths

• “A Manglik must marry a Manglik.” Two Manglik charts are traditionally considered matched, but it is not the only way: the dosha is often cancelled.
• “A Manglik marriage will fail.” No. Mars is one factor in the whole chart; the 7th house, Venus and the running dasha matter as much.
• “It ends at 28.” Some traditions say Mars matures around 28. Treat this as a tradition, not a rule.
• “The guna score settles it.” The 36-guna score does not include the Manglik check; both must be read together.

When is it cancelled?

Traditional texts list several cancellations (parihar), for example Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn), Jupiter’s aspect on Mars, or both partners being Manglik. Whether a cancellation applies depends on the full chart.

Remedies people usually ask about

Traditionally suggested remedies include Mangal shanti puja, prayers to Hanuman on Tuesdays and, in some families, kumbh vivah. A remedy is chosen only after both charts are read.

What to do before a marriage

Have both charts read together: the guna score, the Manglik check for both, and the 7th house and dashas. This takes a 30–60 minute kundli milan session.
